I live by the philosophy of Brazilian-born, award winning floral artist Zita Elze who said, “Basically, I do not think about color or texture-I work with an emotion instead, a feeling inside myself or one that I experience when talking to a client. I then translate that into a design.” My story began in Northern California, home to the iconic Haight-Ashbury, a hub of creativity and revolution, and a region that stirred up my passion for floral design. In the early hours of the morning, I’d bundle up my babies, taking them along for a trip to the bustling San Francisco Flower Market. Getting a cup of hot chocolate was the highlight of my kids’ morning, and mine was experiencing the bright lights, the burst of colors, and the intoxicating fragrance of so many varieties of flowers. While everyone in the city slept, I found myself moved beyond mere wakefulness surrounded by flowers. At Oakland’s YWCA, I got my start in the business, nestled in one of the historic building’s “fishbowls” where small business owners kept shop and showed off their wares in the big, round windows facing the street. There, I received a formal education in floral design and working with clients from all walks of life. But time will take you on a journey, and my path took me to the corporate world as the Executive Director, managing law offices globally, Le Cordon Bleu, and to so many more unexpected places. Always, the dream of returning to my first love, flowers, remained with me. Buds Blooms and Bad Asses marks my return. And in a cathartic twist of fate, I’m back in a historic building. The Steinfeld Warehouse is an artist’s sanctuary; the perfect fit for a floral artist who knows the rules and isn’t afraid to break them.
